Well, it has been a little over 3 years since your last deployment and now we are preparing for you to leave us again. At least we have more warning this time and the boys are that much older. To my fellow military wives, I apologize for not checking in over the past 3 years but I am back!
Tom will be leaving again in January 2010. This time I hope to share my thoughts prior to him leaving as well as when he is away. We have decided not to tell the children until the summer. To those of you who know me, please respect our wishes and not share this info with my kids at this time. Thanks and here's to another safe deployment!

Fort Hood and Killeen ISD put Shoemaker High School students in harm’s way!!!!
As a concerned parent of Kouma Village, a Fort Hood Housing Area, I am shocked and appalled about the news I just received. I was informed by the Mayor of Kouma Village, that as of Monday, January 25, 2010 all bus transportation for high school students will cease to exist due to funding cuts on Fort Hood and a 2-mile rule established by Killeen ISD. How can this be? This was not brought to the attention of the residents and no alternative solutions have been offered. They expect our children to walk on a “hazard road way” (Clear Creek)! Clear Creek, which connects to Hwy 190, is a major thoroughfare and has many car accidents occurring daily. There is no pedestrian signage, nor any sidewalks for our children to walk safely to Shoemaker High. And currently, Metroplex Hospital is adding an addition which has construction workers and road work signs also on Clear Creek. Will it take one of our children being kidnapped or hit by a vehicle for this decision to be overturned? Shoemaker harasses parents every year to fill out that survey so that they can receive Federal Funding based on the amount of DOD dependents which attend the school, but they can’t provide funding to bus our children? I’m confused. I believe Shoemaker High has well over 80% attendance of DOD dependents in their school. Of course, each agency is blaming one another and giving all parents the run around. I spoke with my neighbor this evening and they had not heard about this decision. When Monday morning comes, how many of our students who were not properly notified, will be waiting at the bus stop for a bus that will never show up? Is this how the Army takes care of families? Is this how a Public Education system that thrives because of Fort Hood treats us? How do you justify not funding bus transportation for our children? We are a community that has already dealt with numerous incidents and continues to go without gate guards. Safety and security have always been key issues for this community. Are we not already in harm’s way? This at a time when we are still attempting to heal from the Nov. 5 shootings. My husband is deployed and in harm’s way and now he should have to worry about our teenager safely making it to and from school. Someone needs to answer for this decision. They hid their decision until the very last moment and have not offered any alternatives to our community. I would be willing to pay for my child’s transportation. What about dual military families or single parent military? How will they adjust their schedules? This will have long term negative effects on our community as a whole. Tardiness and absentees will go up and vandalism/skipping school, to name a few. This was not the right decision! Neither Fort Hood, nor Killeen ISD will give us an open forum discussion for us to express our discontent or to even discuss alternative options. Hence my reason for writing to you, the media. We need your assistance! Please cover this story and bring it to the forefront. Give us a voice and an avenue to be heard.
